The Renfield Dynasty: Backstory

Royce and Kylie Renfield were high school sweet hearts, both with pasts they wanted to escape and futures they wanted to build.

Kylie grew up in the foster system, her parents having died when she was young. She became quite independent and resourceful, but always wanted a family of her own to fill in the lonely gaps she felt in life. Royce was someone she could share everything with - a safe place in the midst of unsure footing. They could laugh together, even at the toughest of times, and spent hours dreaming of what a "better life" might look like. It was a no-brainer to accept when he proposed.

Royce’s parents were not exactly stellar people. An only child, he had been referred to by them as their “mistake”. Neither of them invested much in his life. His parents struggled to make ends meet and their marriage work, only paying him enough attention to allow him to survive.

A high school teacher changed everything in Royce’s life, investing time and energy in getting to know him and offering great life advice. Royce left home at 15, finished the last year of high school boarding with the teacher, and determined that he would make a better life for himself.

Kylie was a sweet soul, laughed at all his jokes, and shared the joy of the outdoors with him. The best day of his life was when she married him at City Hall the month after graduation.

Staying in Copperfield wasn't an option. Aside from the fact that Royce wanted to get away from his parents' town, the rent prices were becoming out of reach due to the burgeoning tourism industry.

They looked farther afield and found that the Mayor of a small country town quite a few hours away called Henford-on-Bagley was selling off some run-down heritage land that had been an eyesore for years. The best part? The price was only one simoleon! Sure, there was no power to the place, but there was some basic plumbing because of a natural underground spring on the land, and some buildings remained that could potentially be useable. There was an old stone house on the land - hopefully they could restore it to a liveable state!

Royce and Kylie signed the agreement, packed their few belongings, bought some camping gear with their meager funds, and moved to the Olde Mill Hill lot full of hope for their future. The task ahead was a big one, but they knew the could do it together.

Author's Note

The Renfield Dynasty will start with a renovation challenge that I've created for myself based on a couple of challenges other players have put together previously. I really just needed some good guidelines on when to allow them to clean/renovate, so looking at other ideas online was helpful. :)

I downloaded a lot from the Gallery by CoolCoffeeCat called "Farm in need of a reno" for this challenge. It fits on the largest 64x64 lot in Henford-on-Bagley. The Watson family moved to another larger house that already existed. I think they're a bit pissed off at losing the historical family farm. ;)

Royce and Kylie Renfield were downloaded from the Gallery, a family by 96langerlui99. I adapted the family to suit my needs - like getting rid of two existing kids and a cat! :D

Going to go with a patriarchal line for this dynasty, which will force me to have children until I get a male heir. Gads! But that is different than my royal dynasty, where the firstborn is automatically heir and I only have one kid, or maaaybe two. LOL

Once they'd moved inside the house, Royce and Kylie really began feeling settled, even though they still slept on a dirt floor! Royce would rise with the sun and the birdsong and sneak out so he could get to the fishing pond for that good, early-morning fishing time. Kylie would get up a short while later. Introduction: The First Day

Royce and Kylie arrived at their new "home" midday on Monday. This was the first time they could see the extent of decay first-hand. The sun shone beautifully for five minutes, illuminating the gaping hole in the house roof, the weeds and broken fences everywhere, and the ruins of an old family chapel in the back yard. Then everything clouded over. They unlocked the front door, yanked the creaky thing open, and took a couple of tentative steps into the main room. "Well." Kylie breathed slowly. "Well. This is certainly... something." "Hey, there's a fireplace!" Royce tried to sound positive. But his heart was pounding. Did they make a mistake? Where was the second floor???
